Chelsea face serious competition from Manchester United if they want to sign one central defender this summer.

Chelsea are likely to be in the market for a centre-back when the transfer window opens.

They look set to lose one of their current options and a very experienced one, Thiago Silva. The Brazilian’s contract expires at the end of the season.

Mauricio Pochettino has also had to deal with a lot of injuries in central defence. Wesley Fofana, for example, is still out injured.

It has been reported that the Blues and several other English clubs, including United, have been offered the chance to sign Juventus’ Gleison Bremer. And right now, the Red Devils look to be the team who are most eager to land the 27-year-old.

Manchester United keen to beat Chelsea and others to Gleison Bremer signing

According to Calciomercato.it, United have stepped up their pursuit of Bremer and are trying to gain an advantage over their Premier League rivals.

The same outlet has also claimed that the Manchester club have no problems with activating a €58m (£49.7m) release clause in the Brazilian’s contract.

Sitting sixth in the table, United may be able to offer Bremer Champions League football, whereas Chelsea are not in the position right now to even promise the centre-half minutes in the Europa League next season.

Even so, there is one reason why a move to Chelsea may still appeal to Bremer.

What could help lure Gleison Bremer to Chelsea?

One of Bremer’s role models is currently at Chelsea now, the man he could actually come in to replace, Silva.

The Juventus star revealed last month that his compatriot is one player who inspires him. Following in his footsteps and playing at Stamford Bridge is something that may appeal to Bremer.

Similarly, Bremer has also named David Luiz as one of his role models, so that is another footballer he may want to try and emulate by joining Chelsea.
