Cristiano Ronaldo was left raging after Portugal lost 2-0 to Slovenia.

The shock result on Tuesday (March 26) was the first time Portugal have lost since former Belgium boss Roberto Martinez became their manager. Slovenia scored two goals thanks to Adam Cerin and Timi Elsnik.

Ronaldo, who sat out Portugal's 5-2 win over Sweden last week because he was on holiday, played 90 minutes, but hardly got a sniff as Slovenia successfully stifled the away side's attack. After the match, the Al-Nassr star stormed down the tunnel while gesturing angrily - and even appeared to hold two fingers up to someone in the crowd.

It comes after Portugal defender Joao Cancelo suggested the Saudi-based striker, who left Manchester United for the Middle East, was past his prime and the "national team does not depend entirely on him", reports the Mirror.

He said: "[Ronaldo] is an important player and spent 15 years competing with Messi for the Ballon d'Or, but the peak of a footballer's career is between the ages of 25 and 32. He is an important player for us, but the national team does not depend entirely on him."

This summer's Euros is likely to be the last major international tournament Ronaldo plays in. The 39-year-old was dropped during the latter stages of Portugal's 2022 World Cup campaign, and is expected to play second fiddle to PSG striker Goncalo Ramos out in Germany.

Former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf, who won the World Cup and the Euros with France, thinks Portugal will only stand of chance of lifting the trophy in the summer if Ronaldo isn't in the team. "For me, Portugal are actually one of the contenders for this summer's European Championships," he told BetVictor.

"I actually think they can win the Euros, but only if Cristiano Ronaldo doesn't play. You cannot take away anything that Ronaldo has done for football just because he has gone to retire in the Saudi League."

Leboeuf also said: "I want to thank him for taking the sport to another level, but there is an end for everyone. He has every right to play in Saudi Arabia, although I'm not sure he needed even more money! It annoys me when I hear Cristiano Ronaldo saying that the Saudi Pro League is better than Ligue 1."

"Why do you think he chose to make that comment about Ligue 1 rather than the Portuguese League? It's because Lionel Messi played in Ligue 1. I have lots of respect for him as a player but come on, just shut up! It is unfair to Ligue 1."
