Cristiano Ronaldo failed to contain his emotions following Portugal's defeat to Slovenia as he threw a tantrum when leaving the pitch.

The Euro 2016 winners lost for the first time under Roberto Martinez's tutelage, with Slovenia emerging as 2-0 victors on Tuesday night.

And Ronaldo, who played the entire 90 minutes at the Stozice Stadium, was left furious at the end of the match having complained over fouls against him.

Ronaldo returned to action having been rested for Portugal's win over Sweden last week, a match that the Selecao won 5-2 with five different goalscorers.

But after being recalled to the starting XI for Tuesday night, the 39-year-old could not make much of an impact as Adam Cerin and Timi Elsnik scored in a 2-0 win for Slovenia.

Ronaldo did not hide his feelings at full-time as he was seen storming down the tunnel, gesturing angrily at the officials near to him.

His animated antics continued into the dressing room, with the five-time Ballon d'Or winner unable to add to his 128 goals for Portugal.

There are suggestions that the Al Nassr star might not be the player he once was at international level.

Even his Portuguese teammate Joao Cancelo has hinted that they do not rely on him like they used to.

Speaking to Portuguese radio station RTP, Cancelo said: "He is an important player and spent 15 years competing with Messi for the Ballon d'Or, but the peak of a footballer's career is between the ages of 25 and 32.

"He is an important player for us, but the national team does not depend entirely on him."

The Euros this summer in Germany might well be Ronaldo's final international tournament.

The former Manchester United star is already the highest goalscorer in international football with 128 goals in 206 appearances.

Portugal are one of the favourites ahead of the Euros this summer and boast a star-studded squad including Bruno Fernandes, Joao Felix and Bernardo Silva.

They have been drawn against Turkey, Georgia and Czech Republic for the group stage of the Euros.

The Portuguese have had recent success at the European Championships, winning the tournament in 2016 after beating France 1-0 in Paris.
