Manchester United fans claimed their players looked "too embarrassed to celebrate" after they avoided an FA Cup semi-final shock.
The Red Devils were cruising against Coventry City, but they surrendered a 3-0 lead at Wembley as the Championship outfit scored a stoppage time equaliser to force extra-time. The Sky Blues thought they'd made the final when they scored late on, only for VAR to deny them.
United then completed the job on penalties with Rasmus Hojlund scoring the crucial spot kick. The Dane turned but only had Christian Eriksen rushing to celebrate with him as the remainder of the players stood in the centre circle, largely motionless.
Few appeared in the mood to celebrate as their victory was rather hollow, given they almost let their lead slip. Antony, who has hugely underperformed since his move to Manchester, copped criticism as he cupped his ear to the Coventry players after Hojlund's winning penalty.
United's fans though clocked that their team looked subdued after the victory. One said on social media: "Why on earth has only Eriksen gone over to celebrate with Hojlund????" While another added: "Kinda sad that nobody ran over to Hojlund there." A third commented: "United players too ashamed to celebrate. Hojlund turned around and saw nobody behind him I'm finished."
Erik ten Hag has now guided his team to successive FA Cup finals. For the second season in a row they'll face Manchester City, which makes them massive underdogs. The manner of their victory though saw the pressure ramp up on their Dutch manager.
Roy Keane was among those to take aim at the squad, who again underwhelmed with their lack of character and leadership criticised by their former captain.
He said on ITV : "I think from the United players and the supporters they weren't really going over the top with the celebrations. Because they know that they were quite lucky today. They had the game won at 3-0 and they are almost embarrassed to win in the end."
The Irishman also added: "Every time I see this United team I don't like what I see. They're hard to like and they just play in moments. We keep talking about leadership and characters - I don't see any of that in this United group."
