James Scanlon played key role

Manchester United lined up with a very attacking midfield formation, taking the game to City, and this paid off.

It mean league regular Jacob Devaney was unlucky to sit out, with United opting for Finley McAllister as a sole defensive midfielder.

This allowed room for both Jack Fletcher and James Scanlon to play attacking roles along with Ruben Curley, and the attacking approach blew City away early on, with Wheatley scoring two goals within the opening 25 minyes.

Scanlon has been excellent this season and was unlucky not to provide an assist in the second half when Gabriele Biancheri hit the post after his cross found him in space.

Manchester United’s player celebrated happily after the game, posing with the trophy and sharing snaps on social media.

James Scanlon was among them, posting a picture walking into the dressing room showcasing his number seven shirt, with a winner’s medal around his neck.

Manchester United’s players react

Scanlon’s United teammates loved his picture, with Louis Jackson posting the word ‘iconic’.

Tyler Fletcher shared a Gif of Cristiano Ronaldo celebrating, while Harry Amass wrote simply, ‘wow’.

Scanlon is already a senior international with Gibraltar, and is making a name for himself with a very strong end to the 2023/24 season.

He has scored eight goals for the under-18s, also registering a further five assists.

What are the chances of Scanlon wearing number seven for Manchester United’s first team one day? Well, if he continues at his current rate, he has every chance, he is at a club not shy of giving opportunities to young talent.
