Former Premier League midfielder Michael Brown insists Manchester United MUST improve as he slammed Erik ten Hag for his comments after beating Coventry in the FA Cup.

United blew a 3-0 lead with 20 minutes to go against the Sky Blues on Sunday to draw 3-3 and send the semi-final to extra-time. Although the Red Devils scraped through - winning 4-2 on penalties - Ten Hag and his players faced a plethora of criticism for their inability to see out the tie and victory.

However, Ten Hag came out fighting ahead of their game against Sheffield United, branding the reaction as a "disgrace" and "embarrassing". The Dutchman instead praised the "controlled" performance against Coventry and cited the fact he has now reached successive FA Cup finals during his time at Old Trafford.

Despite facing an almighty scare from rock bottom Sheffield United on Wednesday, United secured a much-needed win to ease the pressure on Ten Hag and his side. The Red Devils came from behind to earn a 4-2 win, which moves them back up to sixth in the table after Newcastle lost at Crystal Palace.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast, Brown highlighted what Ten Hag said after the victory over Coventry and admitted there is so much "wrong" at United.

"Where they are now has got to be better," he said. "I listen to Erik ten Hag and he says the best they have played recently was 70 minutes against Coventry City. This is Manchester United? I know they have injuries and a depleted back four, but the more I listen to him the harder it gets for me.

"They have got to do more. There is all sorts wrong with the club and I think the manager is misguided."

Having recovered from 2-1 down to beat the Blades thanks to a Bruno Fernandes brace and a late Rasmus Hojlund strike, United had come under more scrutiny for their performance. Like after the win over Coventry, Ten Hag defended his players and believes they were in total control.

"We were totally in control," Ten Hag added. "I've seen a different game, sorry. We had two giveaways, two times we were behind so we talk about two negatives - one is focus and one is discipline.

"But for the rest I think we were totally in control. The team showed resilience. It is not easy when you are losing the game but we turned it around against a compact team. We outplayed them. We were calm."
