Manchester United had identified Xavi as a possible successor to Erik ten Hag before he changed his mind over leaving Barcelona, according to reports in Spain.

Xavi announced back in January that he intended to stand down from Barcelona at the end of the season, citing tiredness and a lack of appreciation as reasons behind his exit.

However, Barcelona confirmed earlier this week they had reached an agreement with the former midfielder to stay until at least the end of his current contract, which expires in the summer of 2025.

Relevo report Xavi's decision to stay at Barcelona came as important news to United, who had been monitoring developments of his potential departure.

The Red Devils are said to have made contact with Xavi's agents in recent weeks over a possible move to Old Trafford and he was high on their list of contenders to replace Ten Hag should they decide to part ways with the Dutchman.

Barcelona had been expected to be part of the managerial merry-go-round featuring several of Europe's biggest clubs this summer, but Xavi's U-turn means they are no longer looking for a new head coach. Bayern Munich's Thomas Tuchel, Brighton & Hove Albion's Roberto De Zerbi, Germany's Julian Nagelsmann and his predecessor Hansi Flick had all been linked with the Camp Nou hot-seat.

Bayern do remain on the hunt for a new manager ahead of Tuchel's exit, and like Xavi has been linked with United over the last few months. In turn, the Bavarians look set to turn to Ralf Rangnick, who was interim manager of the 13-time Premier League winners for the second half of the 2021/22 season.

One European giant on the verge of ending their managerial search is Liverpool, who have identified Arne Slot as their leading contender to succeed Jurgen Klopp and talks are ongoing with Feyenoord. Slot had not been seriously linked with many other major vacancies.
