Bayern Munich legend Philipp Lahm knows Joshua Kimmich will do what’s best for the club

Right or central midfield? These things are trivial to Philipp Lahm.

If there is anyone who understands the mental, physical, and emotional toll of shifting in between midfield and right-back, it is former Bayern Munich and German national team star Philipp Lahm.

When asked if he sees Joshua Kimmich as a right-back or a midfielder, Lahm have an earnest take.

“A player must always accept the role assigned to him by the coach. This is part of competitive sports. I played in midfield at the 2014 World Cup because I made my qualities available to the team. For me, Joshua Kimmich is a natural midfielder and a bit better there. But he has proven that he can play right-back. The coach sees what his team needs and where. Therefore, it may make sense to play him as a right-back,” Lahm told Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).

Kimmich will have a tough decision to make in the coming weeks. His future in Bavaria will likely be determined by whoever the new coach is and where that coach plans on playing Kimmich.

For now, it is unclear whether or not the Germany international would welcome a full-time move to right-back. Kimmich has been linked to Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Liverpool FC, Arsenal FC, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Paris Saint-Germain.
