The brother of Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho has aimed a dig at Cody Gakpo on social media.

Garnacho, 19, has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign under Erik ten Hag this term and his brother, Roberto, has been active on social media throughout the season. And after defending the Argentina international from critics, Garnacho's brother has now taken aim at Gakpo, who has struggled for Liverpool this year.

Roberto took to social media on Friday night after it emerged that Feyenoord head coach Arne Slot was set to succeed Jurgen Klopp in the summer. He took the opportunity to slate Gakpo, posting: "They acc (actually) think this bald (referring to Slot) can make Gakpo run faster.”

Gakpo was heavily linked with Manchester United before joining Liverpool in January 2023, however, the Netherlands international has struggled to replicate his phenomenal Eredivisie form in the Premier League.

In total, Gakpo has scored 21 goals in 75 appearances since the Reds shelled out £35million to prise him away from PSV Eindhoven and the 24-year-old has failed to lock down a regular spot in the team over the past 18 months under Klopp.

Gakpo, a forward by trade, has been utilised in midfield at times by Klopp this term and the outgoing Liverpool manager admitted recently that his decision to play the Dutchman in a different position had impacted his form.

“Cody had a bit of a struggle in between the season, it was more my fault, Klopp said back in February. “We spoke about can Cody play a midfield position for us, yes he can in different moments. Is it his position? I would say no.

“The offensive part of the role he can definitely play, but with the defensive things which he was not used to, that cost him a bit of confidence in moments, you could see that.

“The boy came here and was flying from day one pretty much and then all of a sudden you saw, OK that’s now not exactly the same. These kinds of things happen. It will help him in the long term anyway, but in the short term it’s not always that you can directly see it.

“Now he’s absolutely there and, as long as we can avoid it, we will probably not bring him in midfield. But he’s not under the radar. If you ask Cody he would not say it’s the best season of his life, but we all know how good a player he is and he’s always a threat.

“He can be a threat in the air, is on the ground really good, has a super finish, has a good nose for finishing situations, good dribbler, can keep the ball for us. Plenty of super things we can use and need.”
