Manchester United fans have made their feelings clear on Antony after the Brazilian winger’s performance against Burnley in the Premier League clash at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Antony has failed to live up to his hefty price tag since his 2022 move to Old Trafford and the Manchester United star has faced heavy criticism this season.

Ahead of the Burnley match, the 24-year-old United winger had made 26 Premier League appearances in the current campaign and has failed to find the back of the net on one occasion.

Antony, who has one assist in the Premier League this season, has scored in the FA Cup – against Newport County and Liverpool – for United in the current campaign.

United manager Erik ten Hag has kept faith with the Brazil international, despite Antony’s underwhelming impact at Old Trafford in the 2023-24 season.

Antony previously played under Erik ten Hag at Ajax and the United player was reunited with the Dutchman after his whopping £81.3m transfer.

Man Utd star Antony starts vs Burnley

Antony retained his place in the starting XI for the clash against Burnley, despite producing an underwhelming performance against Sheffield United in the midweek.

The former Ajax star played only 55 minutes against Sheffield United before Erik ten Hag withdrew him for Amad Diallo in Manchester United’s 4-2 win at Old Trafford.

Amad Diallo won United fans over with his display against Sheffield United and supporters thought the 21-year-old Ivorian winger could start for the Burnley match.

Antony fended off a potential Diallo start against Burnley, but the Brazilian winger had a frustrating first half for United before making his mark after the break.

The United player finally found his shooting boots and broke the deadlock late on in the second half, with Antony scoring for the first time in the Premier League this season.

Man Utd fans react to Antony’s performance vs Burnley

United fans on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, sent a clear message about Antony’s performance in the Premier League tie.

Red Devils supporters were convinced that Antony proved himself with his superb finishing and showed the “difference” between him and Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford.

Antony superbly intercepted Sander Berge’s poorly timed pass and charged through the centre while under immense pressure from the Burnley midfielder.

However, the United winger did everything in his effort to stay on his feet before managing to fire a low left-footed strike into the bottom right corner of the net.

“Garnacho went to ground multiple times when he could have had a shot at goal. Antony didn’t go down and scored a beaut,” one fan said.

Another commented: “Well in, Antony. He is the proof that it is a complete lie to suggest that putting in 100 per cent effort is enough for the fans to back you.”

“Antony has not been at the top of his goal[scoring form]. But his finesse goal is of the highest quality this season,” a third added.

Someone else tweeted: “Antony silences all his critics, that’s the difference between Antony and Rashford. His work rate, his efforts.”

“Hats off to Antony, brilliant goal, took it absolutely perfectly, a superb finish [while] off balance, he needed that massively, happy for him,” a fifth wrote.

A sixth said: “You can fault Antony for a lot of things but work rate isn’t one of them. He brings everything. Defensively I think he brings a lot, still young [sic] room to develop!”

“Others would’ve dived to get a penalty or not even bothered to make the run. Give Antony the respect he deserves,” somebody else added.

While another finally tweeted: “Antony is finally showing signs of being a real winger.”
