Molding young minds is what the Academy is all about. Teaching them the fundamentals and helping them become not just footballers but well-rounded people is key.
Showing up the right way and consistency are among the most common and useful pieces of advice dispensed to folks on the starters end of the journey. So what better way than to exemplify this maxim than to honor the club record holder for most appearances.
Gemma Bonner, Liverpool FC Women’s record holder for most appearances, has just had a dressing room at the Academy named after her. Joining the likes of Steven Gerrard and Robbie Fowler, the defender now gets to show to all members of the Academy how to do things right way by, among other things, making sure we’re ready and able to show up.
Bonner had this to say to the official site about this moment:
“It’s such a huge honour, I’m not quite sure I can put it into words. Being a young girl growing up as a Liverpool fan, I don’t think it’s quite sunk in yet. We’ve achieved a lot here at the club and for young people to see this as they walk down the corridor is another step and hopefully it can inspire not only the next set of young girls coming through but young boys as well.”
Liverpool FC Women now turn their sights towards a vital clash against Chelsea on May Day. Chelsea currently sit second and a win for the Reds would allow them to draw level with rivals Manchester United in the race for fourth. Up the Reds in their quest for a Champions League berth!
