Former Sunderland striker Dwight Yorke reckons Sunderland have to bring in a new manager who will provide “energy and impetus.”

The 52-year-old, who played for the Black Cats between 2006 and 2009, is one of the Premier League’s most prominent goalscorers having bagged a bundle with Aston Villa and Manchester United. He finished his career on Wearside and now hopes they can push on next season under a new boss.

Sunderland need to regroup in the summer, think about the new manager and who will give them that energy and impetus," he told Crypto Casinos. "There are a lot of questions about the club and not too many answers at the minute, there’s a bit of uncertainty, even with the owners. This season, just finish as high as possible, then next season, push for promotion on a clean slate.”

Yorke also had sympathy with lower-ranked clubs after the scrapping of FA Cup replays and added: “I sympathise with the lower-league clubs. Obviously, except for playing against the big boys and having a chance to play them back at home, the main issue is the money that stops coming in for the lower-league clubs. There should be some sort of compensation for the FA to take away these replays.

“There has to be some common ground. These clubs have been left out to dry. Imagine Maidstone United, who reached the fifth Round and lost to Coventry, drew a big club and got a replay against a top-six side, it would have funded their entire season. It’s a payday for these clubs and there has to be a way around it. The big clubs should give the smaller clubs some money, for sure.”
