Manchester United’s plan for a fire sale shows scale of their crisis

A cull of players may be long overdue at Old Trafford but the speed of its arrival shows they are behaving like a club staring at the abyss

Manchester United’s problem is that of all relegated clubs: who will buy their damaged stock?

United? Relegated? Well, in a sense. Not relegated the way Sheffield United were at the weekend, not plunging through the trapdoor into the Sky Bet Championship, Millwall ho. For an elite club such as United, however, this season represents a form of relegation. Out of the Champions League, battling for a foothold in the Europa League next season, with Newcastle United closing. They’ve been relegated from that upper echelon.
