Former Inter Milan star Wesley Sneijder has boldly claimed that Erik ten Hag already made one major “mistake” during his time as Manchester United manager.

Erik ten Hag’s second season at Old Trafford has fallen flat and the Dutchman is under immense pressure amid uncertainty around his future at the club.

The 54-year-old Manchester United manager can no longer secure a top-four finish this season, meaning the Red Devils will be without Champions League football.

However, Ten Hag has reached his second consecutive FA Cup final and the former Ajax boss faces a tall order in dethroning defending champions Manchester City.

United tasted defeat to Manchester City in last season’s FA Cup final, with Ten Hag’s men falling to a 2-1 defeat at Wembley in 2023.

However, Ten Hag now has the opportunity to avenge United’s FA Cup final defeat last season and help alleviate the noise surrounding his future at Old Trafford.

Sneijder on Ten Hag mistake

Manchester United have been linked with several managers since the arrival of Ineos chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe as co-owner of the Premier League club.

Erik ten Hag’s future at the Red Devils has been placed under the spotlight since Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s arrival, with Ineos taking control of football operations at United.

Wesley Sneijder has insisted that his fellow Dutch compatriot made a big mistake in his United career when he ‘competed’ with United legend Cristiano Ronaldo.

Cristiano Ronaldo saw his playing time limited after the arrival of Ten Hag from Ajax in 2022 and had a high-profile falling out with the United boss.

The 39-year-old Portuguese forward publicly criticised Ten Hag – among many other things – in his bombshell interview with presenter Piers Morgan in 2022.

Ronaldo’s contract was later terminated by mutual agreement and the former United superstar went on to sign for current side Al Nassr.

“He already made a mistake by competing with Ronaldo,” Sneijder said on the Dutch TV show Veronica Offside.

“He lost everyone’s respect there. He thought it would work the other way around, but of course not.

“Those guys in the dressing room thought, “Is this man crazy?”’

Sneijder talks Ten Hag’s Man Utd future

Sneijder remains unconvinced that Ten Hag will survive the chopping block at Old Trafford and be in charge at United next season.

The 39-year-old former Ajax and Real Madrid midfielder believes that Ten Hag should sit “comfortably” until United decide to sack him.

“Of course, he already knows that he has to leave,” Sneijder added, as per the Metro.

“But you’re not going to go yourself. If I was him, I would sit there comfortably [until he’s sacked].”
