Rio Ferdinand has praised Jadon Sancho for his Champions League performance for Borussia Dortmund - and explained why it may help Manchester United.

Sancho starred for Dortmund on Wednesday night in their Champions League semi-final first leg against Paris Saint-Germain. The on-loan United star was named the player of the match as Dortmund won the tie 1-0 thanks to a first-half goal from Niclas Fullkrug.

United loaned out Sancho to Dortmund in January after making just three appearances for the Reds in the first half of the season. Now the 24-year-old has become one of the key players for the Bundesliga club, featuring 17 times with three goals and two assists.

Ferdinand was left in awe of Sancho's performance against PSG on Wednesday. However, the United legend did raise a question over Sancho's previous form at Old Trafford before his loan to Dortmund.

"He’s [Sancho] in the groove," Ferdinand told TNT Sports. "When someone gets in the groove, we see it in different sports. When they’re in the groove and the confidence is there, they churn these performances out.

"He will come off this pitch on a high, we’ll see all these people going on about it on social media, and love it, and rightly so. I hate to go back, but I want to know what happened at Man United. Why didn’t it go well there?"

Ferdinand then went on to suggest potential theories for why Sancho's career at United hasn't gone as many would have hoped. The former Reds defender then explained why Sancho's performances for Dortmund may help United this summer in the transfer market.

"That’s what the frustration used to be at Man United," said Ferdinand. "He’s not doing that, beating people, facing the defender up and going, 'Right, I’m going to go past you.'

"Also, the physicality of the Premier League. Was that an issue? I don’t know. There are so many different things you look at and think what it could be, only Jadon can tell us that.

"But you look at the way he played in a Champions League semi-final, you can’t devalue that. For him and Man United, there is a plus point tonight, the value has gone back up again."
