Paul Scholes revealed that one Manchester United legend was “one of the cleverest players” he ever played alongside in his legendary playing career at Old Trafford.

The 49-year-old former Manchester United star is widely regarded as one of the best midfielders of all time after a prolific career at the Red Devils.

Emerging as one of the famed ‘Class of ‘92’ members, Paul Scholes spent his entire club playing career under Sir Alex Ferguson across two separate spells.

The United legend was the beating heart of the midfield in Sir Alex Ferguson’s legendary teams of the past, with Scholes thriving under the iconic Scotsman.

During his illustrious playing career, Scholes lifted a whopping 11 Premier League titles, two Champions Leagues, three FA Cups and two League Cups.

The former United midfielder initially retired from football in 2011 before he made a U-turn and returned to Old Trafford for the second time in 2012.

Scholes played his final season at Old Trafford in United’s last Premier League title triumph in the 2012-13 campaign, with the United legend subsequently retiring.

Scholes admires ‘clever’ Man Utd legend

Paul Scholes was part of the famed Manchester United side that completed a continental treble in the 1998-99 season under Sir Alex Ferguson.

The United legend played alongside a roster of talented players in the iconic treble-winning team, including Roy Keane, Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke and Ryan Giggs.

The Red Devils’ official website in 2018 revealed that Scholes was tasked with building his ‘ultimate’ United XI in a 2009 matchday programme of United Review.

Scholes’ ultimate United XI included several members of the 1999 treble winners, including United legend Teddy Sheringham.

The former England and United midfielder admitted that Teddy Sheringham was “one of the cleverest players” that he played alongside in his career.

“Teddy was a great pro, and one of the cleverest players I’ve ever shared a pitch with,” Scholes said at the time.

Teddy Sheringham at Man Utd

Legendary former United manager Ferguson snapped up Sheringham from Tottenham in 1997 for a reported £3.5m deal at the time.

Sheringham featured in a star-studded attacking line-up at United during the 1990s alongside the likes of Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The 58-year-old former United and England striker had a prolific impact at Old Trafford and played a key part in the Red Devils’ famous treble win.

Sheringham came off the bench in the final of the 1999 Champions League final against Bayern Munich and scored a crucial injury-time equaliser.

The United legend then set up former teammate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for the winner only two minutes later at the Camp Nou in Barcelona.

Former Tottenham star Sheringham made 153 appearances for United under Ferguson and scored 46 times for the Red Devils.

Sheringham lifted three Premier League titles, a Champions League and an FA Cup before he left Old Trafford in 2001 and returned to Tottenham for a second spell.

The ex-England international went on to play for the likes of Portsmouth, West Ham and Colchester United before announcing his retirement in 2008.
