Every successful Rangers team has always had a Scottish core at its heart or players with a connection to the club.

The current team only really has Ryan Jack in terms of senior players who could be counted as a fan and it is a problem that would be nice to fix, if not essential for manager Philippe Clement.

The Rangers boss will need to strengthen all over his squad and picking up bargains will enable him to spend money where it is needed most, with one player becoming available who would walk on hot coals to play at Ibrox.

Rangers won’t have better chance to land Paddy McNair

At 29-years old, Paddy McNair is an experienced campaigner in English football and has played for some decent sides in Sunderland and Middlesbrough and a giant in Manchester United where he made 27 appearances.

Initially seen as a centre-half, where he still plays regularly for club and country, McNair has done his best work as a defensive midfielder.

Two positions where Rangers need quality and depth.

The Northern Ireland international is no stranger to Ibrox and when Celtic were linked with him, it nearly caused riots across the city due to his well-known allegiances.

He is exactly the type of player that is needed in the squad.

McNair isn’t just a good all-round footballer, he has the mentality and aggression needed to be at Rangers.

He knows how to handle the pressure of being at a big club and also knows the standards that need to be adhered to at Rangers.

With Ben Davies expected to be sold, Leon Balogun not likely to be offered a new contract and John Lundstram reported to be on his way to Turkey, Paddy McNair could offer experienced cover straight away.

McNair’s time at Middlesbrough coming to an end

Out of contract in the summer, it doesn’t look like former Old Trafford teammate Michael Carrick wants to keep him around which makes McNair a cheap option.

Since Carrick took over at Teeside, McNair – despite captaining the side on numerous occasions – only seems to play when others are injured or suspended.

Just because Carrick doesn’t fancy him, there is no reason why McNair wouldn’t be a success for Rangers.

Against Dundee and Ross County, there was something missing from the team, a player who could drag the others up with them and dig them out of a hole.

In the past, we had legends like Paul Gascoigne and Brian Laudrup who could do this for us, but it doesn’t always have to be a flair player.

Barry Ferguson was equally as effective and for all that Paddy McNair might not be on their level in terms of ability, there can be no doubting where his heart lies.
