Manchester United are set for a busy summer transfer window ahead, as are most clubs.

It’s going to be a summer full of incoming and outgoings galore at Old Trafford, presumably anyway with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his Ineos mob taking the reigns.

United’s spending has been nothing short of frivolous in recent years, and Erik ten Hag will be desperate to get it right under the new regime.

This means we don’t want a repeat of some of the following names…

Manchester United’s expensive mistakes

Particularly in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, Manchester United have thrown money around, and not really got too much back in return.

You just have to look at United’s most expensive signings ever to realise that most were a waste of money.

The likes of Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku, Antony and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are to name but a few that the Red Devils will regret spending big on.

But one was arguably the worst of the lot, not in regard to price, but how he treated the club as a whole – Angel di Maria.

Angel di Maria career after Manchester United

A former number seven, Di Maria was one of the best players in the world at the time but was a complete flop around Carrington.

He was supposed to be the new poster boy for the club, but it ended with all United fans less than fond of the Argentine.

Angel found refuge at Paris Saint Germain, where he spent seven years, becoming a club legend in the process. He then had a brief stint at Juventus, then Benfica – where he currently resides.

But is now time for a new final venture for the winger with a familiar face?

According to Fabrizio Romano, Inter Miami have asked about the availability of the former Manchester United man. He took to X to write the following:

‘Inter Miami only asked for Ángel Di María’s situation at Benfica, there’s no formal proposal or advanced talks so far’.

‘Fideo’s future at Benfica remains open, waiting for both parties to make a decision on contract due to expire in June’.

With his contract slowly running down, Di Maria needs to make a decision as to where his next club lies. Lionel Messi would likely welcome the move, with the pair linking up on international duty and briefly at PSG in the past. This will be an interesting deal to watch heading into the summer window.
