Kieran McKenna looks set to return to Old Trafford next season after guiding Ipswich Town to promotion to the Premier League.

McKenna left Manchester United's coaching staff in December 2021 to be appointed as manager of the Tractor Boys. Ipswich were 12th in League One at the time of his appointment and has now guided the club to back-to-back promotions.

Saturday saw Ipswich needing just one point to guarantee automatic promotion from the Championship. The East Anglian club were facing Huddersfield Town at Portman Road and claimed a 2-0 win with goals from Wes Burns and Omari Hutchinson to secure promotion to the Premier League.

The victory means that Ipswich will join Leicester City in playing in the top-flight alongside United next season. The Championship play-offs will commence this month, with Leeds United, Southampton, West Bromwich Albion and Norwich City battling for the final promotion spot.

All eyes will be on the Premier League fixture announcement next month when it will be confirmed when United will face Ipswich home and away. The home fixture is now expected to see McKenna return to Old Trafford for the first time since he left United.

McKenna was part of Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer's coaching staff at United before taking the job at Ipswich. The 37-year-old arrived at Old Trafford as part of Jose Mourinho's backroom staff before being kept on when Solskjaer was appointed.

United are currently still battling to achieve success in both the Premier League and elsewhere this season. The Reds have an FA Cup final against Manchester City to look forward to later this month, as Erik ten Hag seeks his second major trophy as manager.

Ten Hag's side are sixth in the Premier League table and face Crystal Palace on Monday night. United have just four more top-flight fixtures to try and secure European qualification, with the Champions League now officially out of reach.
