Paul Scholes has slammed Erik ten Hag and believes that time could be up for the Manchester United boss following their humiliation at Crystal Palace.

United suffered a new low as they were battered 4-0 at Selhurst Park. Goals from Jean-Philippe Mateta, Tyrick Mitchell and a Michael Olise double condemned the Red Devils to their 13th Premier League defeat of the season, which is their worst ever return since the division was reformed in 1992.

The result has seen the pressure ramp on under-fire boss Erik ten Hag, with United eighth, level on points with seventh-place Chelsea and two behind Newcastle in sixth. The Red Devils have also now conceded 81 goals in all competitions - the most they have shipped during a single campaign in a staggering 47 years.

Delivering his assessment on the game and whether United should sack Ten Hag, Scholes does not think the Dutchman should be afforded anymore time to turn their fortunes around and admitted it "felt like the end" for him. United face four more matches - including the FA Cup final against Manchester City - this season.

He told Premier League Productions: "Tonight almost felt like a final nail in the coffin. There was a lack of knowhow in the team, a lack of effort, going to a team like Crystal Palace, who to be fair are a good team and are doing well, but Manchester United shouldn't be going there and losing 4-0.

"I felt for a while he (Ten Hag) might get another year and work for a club that has calmed down a little by the new owners but it doesn't feel like that now.

"I thought who is out there to replace him? With Thomas Tuchel saying he's leaving Bayern Munich, I don't think that creates a bigger problem for him (Ten Hag) as the problems are there anyway, I think it's quite plain to see that he's on borrowed time.

"Sometimes you get those moments where you think this is the end. I remember Ole Gunnar (Solskjaer) at Watford away, 4-1, it felt very similar to me, it felt like the end."

Scholes' comments come a matter of months after he backed Ten Hag and claimed he was the right man for the job. Granted, it was off the back of an impressive debut season where they won the Carabao Cup and finished third in the Premier League but Scholes was fully backing the Dutchman.

After losing 4-3 against Copenhagen in November, Scholes told TNT Sports: "I don’t think we can afford to do it anymore. I think we’ve got to let this fella go with it. I think he’s been good up to this point.

“He’s got a little bit unlucky tonight, you have to say that with the [Marcus Rashford] sending off. They’re going to play better teams than Copenhagen but I thought there was a little bit of fight there tonight. Just lacking that bit of leadership."
