Manchester United are facing a big summer as Ineos prepare to take charge of a first transfer window at Old Trafford.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and co can’t have been impressed with what they have seen at United since their investment was confirmed back in December.

Erik ten Hag has overseen United going backwards this season, going from a top-three finish to potentially missing out on Europe entirely.

Monday’s 4-0 defeat at Crystal Palace was another example of United’s disappointing campaign and changes are surely coming.

Ineos have so far focused on key appointments but big decisions on Ten Hag and on potential new signings will be imminent.

United certainly need reinforcements in the transfer market this summer and one title-winner reportedly fancies a move to Old Trafford.

Denzel Dumfries transfer stance

United may have struggled this season but a handful of players become league champions over in Italy.

Matteo Darmian, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Alexis Sanchez all helped Inter Milan recapture the Serie A title with a stunning campaign.

Two defeats in 35 games this season means Inter are once again back at the top of Italian football.

United fans won’t be calling for Darmian, Mkhitaryan or Sanchez to come back any time soon, but one of their teammates appears keen on a move.

Gazzetta dello Sport claim that Inter right back Denzel Dumfries ‘would like’ to sign for United this summer.

It’s suggested that Dumfries has ‘always rejected’ the idea of playing for a mid-level Premier League team.

United have dropped off considerably this season but the name value remains enough for Dumfries to be attracted by the prospect of a move.

The report claims that the possibility of a deal is ‘real’ – as long as Ten Hag remains as United boss.

Dumfries would seemingly like to work under his fellow Dutchman, but Ten Hag’s future hangs in the balance as things stand.

Ten Hag will have seen Dumfries up close during their Eredivisie days, with Ten Hag coaching Ajax against Dumfries and PSV Eindhoven.

There may now be a chance for the pair to join forces at United with Dumfries out of contract in 2025 and Inter willing to sell for around €30million (£26million) if no agreement can be reached.

Do Manchester United need Dumfries?

Interest in Dumfries is understandable given his ability as a powerful, attack minded right back or wing back.

Dumfries has hit three goals and five assists in 29 Serie A games this season and has been an attacking threat ever since joining Inter in 2021.

The 28-year-old is a more natural wing back than a right though, and United don’t really play with wing backs.

It’s a similar story with fellow Dutchman Jeremie Frimpong; the attacking ability is appealing, but he is more natural further forward.

United have so many issues to fix but right back may not be the absolute priority heading into this summer.

Diogo Dalot has actually been one of United’s better performers this season and he should go into next season as the first-choice right back.

Bringing in Dumfries only really adds up if Aaron Wan-Bissaka is on his way out and even then, we doubt whether Ineos would be all that keen.

Paying up for a 28-year-old defender doesn’t seem like a move Ineos will prioritise and we would be surprised to see Dumfries arrive at Old Trafford this summer – despite his interest in a switch.
