Manchester United’s goalkeeping ranks change enormously last summer but there could be more alterations in the upcoming transfer window.
Erik ten Hag clearly wanted to shake up his goalkeeping options but few would have predicted so many moves.
David De Gea’s contract wasn’t extended whilst the likes of Jack Butland, Dean Henderson, Nathan Bishop, Matej Kovar and Ondrej Mastny all moved on on.
In came Andre Onana, reuniting with his former Ajax boss Ten Hag in a big-money move from Inter Milan.
United also snapped up Turkish international Altay Bayinidir from Fenerbahce but he has only made one start since that move.
Bayindir’s lack of action has resulted in speculation surrounding his future with Trabzonspor linked over a £2.5million summer deal.
United need to have goalkeeping targets in mind for the summer, just in case Bayindir does push to leave and chase first-team action elsewhere.
A move for Real Sociedad’s Alex Remiro has been rumoured but one potential target may have ruled out any Old Trafford switch.
Diant Ramaj transfer stance after Manchester United interest
United fans have become used to seeing links to Ajax players – either past or present – in the Ten Hag era.
Onana, Lisandro Martinez and Antony have all arrived and one more player has been linked.
This time, it’s a player who hasn’t actually worked with Ten Hag in Amsterdam.
Reports in February suggested that United are interested in signing Ajax goalkeeper Diant Ramaj.
The 22-year-old only joined Ajax from Eintracht Frankfurt last summer but he has impressed in the Netherlands this season, even being called a ‘great’ goalkeeper by boss John van ‘t Schip.
United have seemingly spotted Ramaj’s potential but the London Evening Standard highlight a problem.
They claim that Ramaj is reluctant to give up his spot as Ajax’s first-choice stopper.
Arsenal are also interested in Ramaj but the German – who can also play for Kosovo and Albania – doesn’t want to just sit on the bench.
Ramaj is currently out injured but once he returns, he is expected to go straight back into the team ahead of Geronimo Rulli.
Ramaj spent so long struggling for first-team action at Heidenheim and Eintracht Frankfurt, so it’s no surprise that he wants to keep this Ajax role going.
Who else could United sign?
United may find it difficult to lure Ramaj away from Ajax if the idea is – as expected – for him to serve as backup to Onana.
That may leave Ten Hag and co to look elsewhere for another goalkeeper.
American stopper Patrick Schulte has been linked having impressed in Major League Soccer with Columbus Crew.
The 23-year-old has really emerged over the last year and has picked up his first United States cap.
Schulte could fit the bill as a goalkeeper United look to bring in and develop, but much depends on Bayindir.
The Turkey international surely understood that he would be backup to Onana before signing on the dotted line.
Still, his lack of game time in cup competitions has to be a concern and Bayindir may well feel that he already needs to move on.
United need to have targets on the list just in case that does happen, but Ramaj may be one to forget about now.
