Graham Potter has turned down the chance to become the next Ajax head coach, preferring to wait until the right job comes along.

The Dutch club are hoping to appoint Francesco Farioli, the Nice coach, having endured a torrid season under the interim manager John van ‘t Schip in which they are languishing in fifth place in the Eredivisie, 36 points behind the leaders PSV Eindhoven.

Potter held talks with Ajax before making his decision and although the club’s hierarchy have not 100 per cent ruled out the chances of recruiting him, there is an acceptance that any deal is very unlikely, which is why they have turned to Farioli.
