Chris Sutton believes that Erik ten Hag has "lost the plot" in a damning verdict on the state of Manchester United.

The Dutchman is fighting to save his job after the Red Devils were on the receiving end of another hammering, this time at Crystal Palace. It is their 13th defeat in the league this season, the most they've ever suffered during the Premier League era.

Ten Hag is into his second season but looks like he could miss out on European football with United sat in eighth, which would be another new low in the Premier League. The ex-Ajax boss has regularly referenced the injury troubles his faced, citing them as a reason for their notable decline this term.

Sutton has commented how the team have showed little sign of progress this term - and instead are going backwards and has tipped Ten Hag to receive his marching orders.

He told the 'All Kicking Off' podcast: "They had a good season last season about making progress. More pertinently, it was about them controlling games because I didn't see that they had any control in games. The whole season that has been a problem.

"It's not getting any better. And because of that, you could argue it's got worse. Because of that, that's why Erik ten Hag will go. But I think the point you make about him and his coaching is a very valid one at this moment in time.

"He seems to have lost the plot."

Ten Hag has continued to defend his methods and suggest that things are not as bad as their results and league position look. That is despite them sneaking past Coventry City in the FA Cup semi-final after they'd surrendered a 3-0 lead at Wembley.

United haven't given a manager longer than three years since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013. There is talk of Sir Jim Ratcliffe ringing more changes in the summer and eyeing a new man in the dugout.

Sutton though insists that the Old Trafford hotseat is not currently a desirable job.

"I think what have we learned since Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down is United have regressed," he said. "We can look at Ten Hag, but you can go back through all the managers who have been in charge. You mentioned Mourinho, (Louis) Van Gaal and they haven't been able to find a way.

"It's a car crash of a job to be handed. But it is a big club. They have to find the way back. And I think it's going to be a slow process, a laborious process. And once again, you know, the word patience is going to be required."
