Arsenal are aiming to break an unwanted streak when they visit Old Trafford to face Manchester United in a crucial title clash.

The Gunners have won just once at Man United in the last 18 years, and this win came during a period where fans were not permitted in stadiums.

A Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang penalty gave Arsenal a 1-0 win, but this was a far cry from the other challenges they have faced in a full Old Trafford with the pressure of the home crowd.

Arsenal’s last win at Man United with a full stadium astonishingly came in the 2006-07 season. A late Emmanuel Adebayor strike secured the three points on what was a big occasion for Arsene Wenger, who was without star striker Thierry Henry.

Wenger’s side would go on to do the double over United that season, with Henry netting a last minute winner at The Emirates later that year, but the Frenchman was unavailable through injury, but Wenger managed to find a solution.

Jens Lehmann was the number one goalkeeper, and he made an outstanding save from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the dying moments of the match to secure all three points.

Emmanuel Eboue and William Gallas were the fullbacks on the day, with Gallas starting at left-back that season having replaced Ashley Cole after his controversial move to Chelsea.

Kolo Toure and youngster Johan Djourou were tasked with stopping a United team containing attackers Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney, but they did keep a clean sheet, something no Arsenal team has done with fans at Old Trafford since.

Wenger played a five man midfield, with Gilberto Silva, Cesc Fabregas and Tomas Rosicky lining up in the middle of the park in what was a formidable trio.

Alexander Hleb and Freddie Ljungberg were on the flanks, with Adebayor starting in place of Henry as a lone striker.

Henry had started and scored in the previous game against Middlesbrough, but was unavailable, and Adebayor proved to be the perfect replacement.

Fabregas had caught Ronaldo in possession in the 86th minute, before slipping the ball through to Adebayor, who slotted a finish beyond Tomas Kuszczak in the United net.

The game took place in September, but it was Arsenal’s first win of the campaign. The Gunners had started poorly in their first season at the Emirates Stadium, drawing with Aston Villa, before following up a defeat to Manchester City with another draw at home to Middlesbrough.

This match holds extra significance now given that Arsenal have not won in front of a full Old Trafford since, but at the time it was a big boost. Wenger’s side would win their next four matches in a row, but Adebayor went seven games without a goal before netting in a North London derby victory in December.

United would have the last laugh however, as they went on to win the title with ease, whilst Arsenal finished fourth, 21 points behind their rivals. Sir Alex Ferguson’s side only lost five Premier League games that season, and two came at the hands of Arsenal, but it was a transitional year for the Gunners and no silverware followed their historic win.
