Scott McTominay and Scotland have been dumped out of Nations League group A following a 3-1 aggregate play-off defeat to Greece. On Thursday evening, a penalty from the former Manchester United man saw the Tartan Army win the first leg and head back to Glasgow with the advantage.

In order to remain in the top group, Scotland needed to hold onto their lead, but technical difficulties with the BBC's coverage at Hampden Park for the second leg unfortunately set the tone for the hosts.

McTominay did force Greece goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis into several saves in the early stages but it was the visitors that took the lead through Giannis Konstantelias after 21 minutes. Just before half time, Konstantinos Karetsas doubled Greece's lead which put them in front on aggregate.

Steve Clarke's side desperately needed to score the next goal, but some sloppy play in midfield just a few seconds into the second half allowed Greece to win possession back and make it 3-0 with Christos Tzolis on target this time. Scotland pushed for a route back into the game but Greece held firm and thus earned promotion from group B.

As a result, Scotland were relegated and their next set of Nations League fixtures will subsequently be in the second division. Since departing Old Trafford, McTominay has impressed for new club Napoli while also continuing to shine on the international stage.

His goal from the first leg took headlines for other reasons though, as the 28-year-old was forced to take his spot-kick while lasers were being shone in his face from the home fans.

Despite UEFA being told to take action and the incident described as 'disgraceful', he showed great composure to score his eleventh senior goal for Scotland and eighth of the 2024/25 campaign. With Scotland's next game not until June, focus will return to the Serie A title race for McTominay and his Napoli teammates.

Antonio Conte's side currently sit second, three points off leaders Inter while Atalanta are in third and six points off the top. Napoli's first game back after the March international is a big one as they welcome AC Milan to Naples with a league double eyed after their 2-0 win at San Siro earlier this season.
