Ruben Amorim wants £45m star to replace Andre Onana, he snubbed Man Utd transfer under Erik ten Hag

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has decided to leave Andre Onana out of the squad to face Newcastle United.

Premier League action is the focus for Manchester United once again, as Ruben Amorim takes his side to face Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon.

United drew 2-2 with Lyon on Thursday night but will still feel a sense of disappointment having only left France with a draw.

Joshua Zirkzee’s header had put United in front, only for Andre Onana to spill a late shot and allow United target Rayan Cherki to score.

Onana has been left out of the United squad to face Newcastle, with the goalkeeper needing some time out of the firing line.

Altay Bayindir comes in, but United may look to sign another goalkeeper at the end of the season.

Manchester United’s top goalkeeper target emerges

United In Focus understands that United have been scouting Parma’s Zion Suzuki with regularity throughout the season.

The Japan international has impressed in Serie A this season, and United have been tracking his development in Italy.

The Mirror (13/04, p66) report that Amorim wants to target Suzuki as his new goalkeeper at the end of the season.

Parma want a huge £45million fee for Suzuki, though, and United ultimately need to sell Onana in order to strike a deal.

The report adds that Amorim will continue to have Suzuki scouted in the final weeks of the season.

Onana is wanted in Saudi Arabia, and a departure this summer could be on the cards unless he finds his form again.

Investing big money in a 22-year-old as Amorim’s new first choice would be a bold move for United, but Suzuki has dazzled in Italy this season.

Zion Suzuki has snubbed Manchester United in the past

Suzuki was born in the United States to a Ghanaian father and Japanese mother, making him eligible for all three nations.

The 6ft 3in stopper chose Japan and has now made 18 appearances for Samurai Blue.

Suzuki previously impressed with Urawa Red Diamonds and Sint-Truiden before heading to Parma last summer.

United fans may be familiar with Suzuki, as he has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in the past.

Reports from Japan in the summer of 2023 suggested that United were set to sign Suzuki as Erik ten Hag chased another goalkeeper, but he joined Sint-Truiden instead.

Suzuki claims that he rejected United, believing a move to Belgium was the best step for his development.

It’s hard to disagree; Suzuki has continued to develop and is now worth £45million in Parma’s eyes, rather than being stuck behind Onana at Old Trafford.

This summer may be the right time for Suzuki to finally make the move to Old Trafford, but United will have to dig deep for his signature.
