Manchester United fans dropped a clear-cut verdict after Altay Bayindir took his place between the sticks ahead of Andre Onana for the Newcastle match on Sunday.
Andre Onana left Manchester United fans deeply frustrated after the former Ajax and Inter Milan star’s horror showing against Lyon in the Europa League quarter-finals.
The 29-year-old Cameroonian committed two major howlers that allowed Lyon to snatch a draw against United in the first-leg tie at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais.
Onana’s form at United has taken a turn for the worse in the 2024-25 campaign, despite appearing to turn over a new leaf at the beginning of the season.
The Cameroon international has remained the Red Devils’ No 1 under Ruben Amorim after the former Sporting CP manager replaced Erik ten Hag at United in 2024.
But United manager Ruben Amorim made the big call to drop Onana from the Red Devils squad for the trip to St James’ Park to face Newcastle in the Premier League.
Altay Bayindir has played second fiddle to Onana and the 26-year-old Turkish shot-stopper had only made six appearances ahead of the Newcastle encounter.
The Turkey international’s last match for United was back in January and Amorim handed Bayindir his Premier League debut after Onana was left out of the squad.

Man Utd fans’ reaction to Altay Bayindir’s display vs Newcastle after Premier League debut at St James’ Park
Manchester United fans on social media platform X, formerly Twitter, insisted that Altay Bayindir’s “audition” ended in complete disaster against Newcastle.
“Bayindir’s audition [is] over. Absolutely pathetic performance,” one X user said.
Another United fan added: “Bayindir has failed his audition woefully. Signing a GK in the summer is now a top priority for Ineos.”
“Audition over for Bayindir,” someone else commented.
A fourth Red Devils supporter wrote: “Bayindir failed the audition, we’re def getting a GK this window.”
While a fifth tweeted: “Bayindir failing the audition. No [Joshua] Zirkzee. Looks like our Europa [Leauge] race may end on Thursday to cap off a horrific season.”
Somebody else posted: “Bayindir, this is the worst audition ever.”
And an eighth United fan simply claimed: “[That] Bayindir howler possibly just making a way for Onana to start against Lyon this upcoming midweek.”
What happened in Newcastle vs Man Utd in the Premier League clash at St James’ Park?
Newcastle opened the scoring in the first half at St James’ Park after Sandro Tonali broke the deadlock for Eddie Howe’s men in the 24th minute on Sunday.
Manuel Ugarte lost the ball before Kieran Trippier later found Alexander Isak in the middle and the Newcastle striker flicked the ball over the top to Sandro Tonali.
Tonali then smashed a superb first-time volley past a helpless Bayindir, but United managed to climb back into the Premier League match before half-time.
Amorim’s men found an important equaliser in the 37th minute after Manuel Ugarte won possession in the United half and unleashed Diogo Dalot on the counter-attack.
Diogo Dalot superbly charged into the Newcastle half before he slotted the ball into the path of Alejandro Garnacho, who fired a superb low shot past Nick Pope.
Newcastle restored their lead over United only four minutes into the second half after Harvey Barnes fired an easy tap-in past a helpless Bayindir at St James’ Park.
Harvey Barnes put Newcastle 3-1 up and completed his brace after he dispossessed Noussair Mazraoui before scoring a stunning solo effort in the 64th minute.
Bayindir’s Premier League debut took a turn for the worse after he carelessly passed the ball straight out to Joelinton, who headed the ball to Bruno Guimaraes.
Bruno Guimaraes then fired his strike past a helpless Bayindir and Newcastle extended their thumping lead over United to 4-1 at St James’ Park.
United will now resume their Europa League campaign on Thursday evening with their crucial second-leg quarter-final tie against Ligue 1 side Lyon at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils and Lyon will kick off their return-leg clash at 8pm UK time, with a place in the Europa League semi-finals hanging in the balance.
