Manchester United defender Jonny Evans has returned to training after a lengthy spell on the sidelines, however he is unlikely to feature in Thursday night’s clash with Lyon.

The former Northern Ireland international last played for United in December, featuring in a 4-3 League Cup loss to Tottenham Hotspur.

The Red Devils drew the first leg of the Europa League Quarter-Final in Lyon last Thursday.

Ahead of the second leg, boss Ruben Amorim said: “Matthijs de Ligt isn’t going to return this season. Ayden Heaven is out for this game. He had a small issue in the same spot during training, a contact with a team-mate.

“Jonny Evans is returning to the training but is not available for this game and some other players that we have to manage the minutes.

“Amad Diallo is not ready for this month but we hope to have Amad still for this season.”

Evans is set to leave Manchester United at the end of the season. The Red Devils are not expected offer Evans an extension to his current deal, making him a free agent this summer.

The centre-back, who first joined United in 2004 as a 16-year-old and departed in 2015, returned to the club in 2023 initially on trial due to an injury crisis in then manager Erik ten Hag’s squad before earning a full-time contract.

He would go on to win the FA Cup with the team last season, featuring in the Final against Manchester City, which completed a glittering set of trophies won with the Red Devils.
