Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea apologised for his two first half mistakes in the Red Devils’ 4-0 away defeat to Brentford.
Erik ten Hag’s side were pulverised by a stunning first half display from the Bees, who went into half-time with an jaw-dropping 4-0 lead against the Reds. But the wheels of embarrassment began to spin for United the moment Josh Dasilva’s weak 20 yard effort found its way through De Gea’s hands and into the back of the net.
Less than ten minutes later, De Gea played Christian Eriksen into trouble, causing the Dane to be dispossessed by Mathias Jensen, who made no mistake with his finish. And while the Spanish goalkeeper could not be blamed for the third and fourth goal, he was the first to volunteer for this afternoon’s post-match interviews.

“I think I cost my team three points today,” De Gea said to Sky Sports News. “It was a poor performance from myself. After the first mistake and then the second, it was very tough and it was a horrible day.”
Ben Mee added the finishing touch to a training ground set-piece routine for Brentford’s third goal, before Bryan Mbeumo completed a stunning counterattack with a ruthless finish past De Gea. But when asked if the score-line could have been different without the first mistake, the United No.1 was happy to hold his hands up.
“I think so,” De Gea added. “That [the mistake] cannot happen in professional football. Of course, we should react better, but at the moment we are in now, it’s tough every time we concede a goal.

“I should have saved the first shot and probably the result would have been different.” De Gea was also not shy to admit he was very culpable for Brentford’s second goal, playing Eriksen into danger in a very vulnerable position.
“It just depends on how the game is going,” De Gea said when asked if he should have punted the ball up the pitch instead. “Maybe I have to read the game better and then kick it long. Maybe I should have played to Cristiano?
“We try to have the ball but sometimes, like today, they press one against one across the whole pitch. So I should have read [the game] better today.”
