Arsenal fans are buzzing over missing out on the signing of Lisandro Martinez after he made a shocking start to life at Manchester United.

The Argentina international was at the centre of a transfer tug-of-war between the two Premier League clubs. The Gunners had first registered an interest in the defender, who had just been voted as Ajax's player of the year.

However, United ramped up their own efforts in trying to purchase the 5ft 9in centre half and blew Arsenal out of the water with a huge bid. After agreeing to a deal of up to £57million with Ajax, Martinez was on his way to Old Trafford to reunite with Erik ten Hag.

But just two games into his Red Devils career and it appears that it might be money not well spent after two defeats to Brighton and Brentford. The latter Ten Hag had to take off the Argentine at half-time after being torn apart in 45 minutes where United conceded four times.

And Arsenal fans are absolutely over the moon after missing out on Martinez's signature, which paved the way to them going out and bringing in Oleksandr Zinchenko from Manchester City. One fan said: "Thank f**k we signed Zinchenko over Lisandro Martinez. Edu & Mikel, very well done. #afc."

Another wrote: "Arsenal fans must be buzzing they didn't get this Martinez. He's too small to be a CB in the premier league." And a third posted: "Arsenal dodged a bullet with Lisandro Martinez."

And this fan said: "I'm just glad Martinez didn't come to Arsenal! We would have missed out on Super Zin." While this supporter tweeted: "I'm so grateful that Arsenal was unable to sign Martinez … I'm not going to be dealing with that dunked week in week out."

It doesn't get easier for United, who face Liverpool at Old Trafford next week while it remains to be seen whether Ten Hag will drop Martinez or not. Raphael Varane came on for him at half-time and looked more assured at the back, though the damage had been done.
