Paul Scholes has brutally told Manchester United pair Jadon Sancho and Antony they were "a waste of time" against Manchester City.

The two wingers were both highlighted in the 6-3 derby defeat for their lack of tracking back to help in defence, with Erik ten Hag's side being completely overrun by their rivals. Scholes called them out on Instagram on Monday (October 3).

He posted a picture of his former team-mates David Beckham and Ryan Giggs with the caption: "Anyone remember when wingers used to help their full-backs?" And he slammed them both once again ahead of United's 3-2 Europa League win over Omonia Nicosia.

Speaking on BT Sport, the Red Devils legend said: "I’ve never seen anyone have a foothold against Pep’s teams, it doesn’t happen.

"You have to be defensive first and foremost, not let any goals in, then at some point then you can go on the counter-attack with the pace you have.

"I thought the wide players were lazy, you’ve got two full-backs who are unproven at the highest level in [Diogo] Dalot and [Tyrell] Malacia, they were left alone.

He and fellow winger Jadon Sancho have been slammed for their lack of defensive work

"I know [Phil] Foden and [Jack] Grealish have had a lot of plaudits for the way they played on Sunday, rightly so, but if you go to the Dortmund game, Jack Grealish especially struggled because they got it perfectly.

"Every time the ball went to him, they had five or six players around him, they were helping their full-backs so he had nowhere to go, he got stick for that. At the weekend, Jadon Sancho and Antony were a waste of time."

Reports claimed Antony had failed to follow Ten Hag's defensive guidance against City but he and Sancho kept their places in the starting XI to take on Cypriot minnows Omonia.

The Brazil international had a fairly solid showing but Sancho endured a nightmare first half in which he played a part in the hosts taking a shock lead, before he was hooked for Marcus Rashford at half-time.
