Manchester United called for help from the substitutes bench against Omonia after trailing 1-0 at half-time.

Marcus Rashford made a decisive impact, with fellow substitute Anthony Martial scoring an excellent effort after an assist from United’s number 10.

This was a good way for Martial to follow up his derby brace at the weekend as he continues his comeback from injury.

Adding in an assist against Liverpool, he now has three goals and one assist this season without starting a single game.

Ten Hag admits United missed Martial

Speaking after the game, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag praised the Frenchman and admitted the team missed him in the opening matches of the season.

Ten Hag told BT Sport: “We have already seen [Martial’s importance] in pre-season. Martial getting injured was a big disappointment for me and the team. We missed him.

“It has an impact on the first couple of results.”

The first two games of the season saw United lose to Brighton and then Brentford, with Martial suffering a hamstring injury a week before the campaign began.

This left United short, with Cristiano Ronaldo lacking match fitness in August after starting the season, and United’s only strike in the first two games was an own goal.

Martial then returned as a substitute to set up a winning goal against Liverpool for Marcus Rashford, before he suffered an Achilles injury.

Now fit again, United are taking it slow, with Martial on the bench for the last two games. He is doing everything possible to reclaim a starting place.

United have looked better when he is in the line-up, and hopefully he can stay injury free.
