World Cup

Varane and Eriksen go head-to-head

|

Raphael Varane and Chrsitian Eriksen will be hoping to feature for their respective nations as France take on Denmark at Stadium 974 in Doha.

France got their title defence of the World Cup off to the perfect start as they put in an impressive showing against Australia, in which they won 4-1 on Tuesday evening.

A few hours before France and Australia kicked-off, Denmark were held to a 0-0 draw against a well organised and vibrant Tunisia side, who brought on United youngster Hannibal Mejbri in the second half of that game.

Denmark will be hoping to give France a better challenge than Australia did and one player that they will want to be at his best is Manchester United’s number 14, Eriksen as he is an influential player for the Danes at the heart of their midfield.

France need to be acutely aware of the danger that Eriksen possesses because if you give him time and space on the ball, then he has the ability to pick out passes with ease, so it will be an important role for the France defence and midfield to be alert to this. One player that will know what Eriksen is all about is his fellow United team-mate, Raphael Varane, who recovered from injury to take his place on the substitute bench during the win over Australia, but he will be hoping to start for the defending champions tonight.

Varane is a key player for Didier Deschamps’ side as he brings leadership qualities and he brings calmness to the French defence, which will be required tonight as Denmark have proven a tricky proposition for France, winning their last two competitive games against tonight’s opponents.

The game will kick off at 4pm UK time, and will be shown on ITV for those in the United Kingdom.
