Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson has been hailed as Scotland’s best starter during yesterday’s win over Cyprus.

Robertson played the full 90 minutes of the 3-0 victory, registering an assist each for Aston Villa’s John McGinn and Manchester United’s Scott McTominay. And reflecting on his impressive display, Edinburgh Evening News said he was ‘probably’ the best of Steve Clarke’s starting XI.

The distinction is made purely because McTominay stole the show with two goals from the bench. But of the XI put out by Clarke, Robbo was reportedly the standout.

It is claimed that he ‘could’ve done better’ with a couple of ‘big moments’ around his own penalty box. But this feels unnecessarily nit-picky in a game in which his team won comfortably.

On the flip-side, the Evening News report that Robertson‘s ‘impetus to charge forward was always there.’ That sounds familiar!

Robbo still rising to every challenge

If Scotland are to qualify for a second consecutive European Championships, then it’s vital that they win their home games. Cyprus may not have posed the toughest of challenges, but they still needed to be beaten.

With Spain coming to Hamden on Tuesday, it was imperative that yesterday ended with three points in the bag. Thankfully for Robertson and co, they got the job done.

Norway and Georgia make up the rest of the group. Both boasting superstars in Erling Haaland and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, they won’t be easy for Scotland to stop.

But neither do either look completely unbeatable. Robertson himself certainly won’t be fazed by having to thwart Haaland or Kvaratskhelia.

As his country’s captain, the £10m Liverpool man comes in for a lot of scrutiny when the international break rolls around.

But as yesterday’s performance shows, he’s still absolutely key to their chances of qualifying for Germany 2024. A pair of assists is not to be sniffed at, whoever the opponent. So bring on whoever you like, Robbo will be ready for them.
